Chip-pivoting strategies to mitigate the consequences of supply chain interruptions

embedded world Conference 2022 | 22 June, 14:15-14:45
Speakers:  Andrea Cattani, CAREL Industries & Johannes Lask, SEGGER Microcontroller

Carel Industries is an Italy-based multinational company, which provides control technology and humidification for air conditioning and refrigeration. It offers energy savings solutions and data-driven services through an IoT platform. c.pCO sistema is Carel’s solution for managing HVAC/R applications and systems. It consists of programmable controllers, user- and communication interfaces, remote management systems and cloud services to offer a control system that is powerful yet flexible. Like many other industrial companies, Carel was also hit by the chip crisis, but it was not new to this experience, since 2016 already defined and tested chip-pivoting strategies to mitigate the consequences of sudden interruptions on the supply chain of critical components. Few years ago Carel had to change the main MCU used in the c.pCO product line twice, as the original chip and later also the replacement model were affected by shortages. In each case, thanks to the modular product structure, an hardware redesign had been carried out within a few weeks and, thanks to the use of Segger’s all-in-one embedded OS emPower OS, the application software could be transferred unchanged to the new design. A production stop could thus be avoided. This presentation describes the system architecture of Carel's c.pCO controllers, chip-pivoting strategies, the process of redesigning with a new MCU, and the use of emPower OS to make the make the application independent of the underlying hardware.

Providing smartphone-like user interaction on any embedded device

electronic displays Conference 2022 | 23 June, 11:40-12:00
Speakers:  Axel Wolf, SEGGER Microcontroller

After the triumphant advance of smartphones, you find more and more embedded devices using touch displays, on which customers then expect user guidance like on a phone. The interactive interfaces must be able to be implemented even on resource-limited MCU-based systems and must work on any hardware and any display. To achieve these goals, comprehensive graphics libraries are needed. However, a major challenge is that many GUIs are created by graphic designers, not software developers. This means that there is a high degree of internal coordination with the development, which then converts these templates into software. With SEGGER’s AppWizard and sophisticated graphics library emWin, it’s possible to implement high-end user guidances on touch displays without having to program a line of code. In this presentation, the participant will be introduced to the to the most outstanding features of emWin. In addition, an interactive GUI will be created with the AppWizard in just a few minutes.
